WATCH: Singer Johnny Mathis talks about being gay: ‘It bothered me that it bothered people’

This CBS Sunday Morning interview is so refreshing. Legendary singer Johnny Mathis talks about his controversial 1982 magazine interview in which he stated that homosexuality was “a way of life that I’ve grown accustomed to.” He tells Nancy Giles why he wasn’t concerned about the potential impact on his career, despite receiving death threats. “It bothered me that it bothered people!” he laughed.

10 Remarks

  1. I honestly can’t stand to hear the man sing, his vibrato grates on my nerves. But, that’s pretty awesome he came out way back when and though he stopped talking about it, he never went back into the closet. So serious kudos to the man for that and for having a very long career!

  2. He was always my gay hero! Would never tell anyone!

My FIRST little boy LOVE! Thank you for sharing this delightful interview.

  4. I had the pleasure of interviewing this down-to-earth, gracious, good-looking man back in ’75. He recently released a new cd entitled “Johnny Mathis sings the Great NEW American Songbook. He sings Bruno Mars, Adele, Whitney, John Legend, and more, and he has still got “it.” The arrangements are cool – It’s a wonderful album. Check it out!

  5. I love Johnny Mathis. One of the greatest voices of our generations.

Gorgeous either way. Love you Johnny Mathis

  8. What a voice. It’s poetry I believe and an icon in easy listening music. I discovered it through my parents and for me it’s music that surpasses the ages and time. Singers like Johnny Mathis once get born every hundred years.

I agree with Stephan. I have loved Johnny Mathis for most of my adult life. His voice is unique.

  10. Now, Mathis regrets being so secretive. “I had blown this thing out of proportion about being gay,” he says. “It doesn’t hurt me. I know myself. It didn’t hurt my parents. They knew from the beginning. My friends know. It was the times. And time marches on. And now it doesn’t matter.”
