Andrew Rannells will be in Broadway’s “Hamilton” for a month while Jonathan Groff films “Looking” finale
Andrew Rannells is going back to Broadway and is, once again, replacing a fellow openly gay star.
Beginning October 27, Rannells will take over the role of King George in the hit musical Hamilton from Jonathan Groff.
He last appeared on Broadway in 2014 when he took over the title role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch from Neil Patrick Harris.
While Harris never returned to Hedwig, Groff will be returning to Hamilton. The actor is taking a break from the show to film the finale of HBO’s Looking which was canceled earlier this year after two seasons.
Rannells tweeted: ‘I’m just too excited about joining @HamiltonMusical ! I will take excellent care of your wigs, Groff.
Rannells, a regular on HBO’s Girls, will leave Hamilton on November 29 and Groff is scheduled to return to the production at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on December 1.
In addition to Hedwig, Rannells has appeared on Broadway in Jersey Boys and Hairspray and earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance as Elder Price in The Book of Mormon.
