Showtune Sunday: Three gorgeous versions of “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Adele, George Michael and Bonnie Raitt

I Can’t Make You Love Me is one of my all-time favorite songs ever since I saw Bonnie Raitt sing it live on the Grammys in 1992.

It was written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin and recorded by Raitt on her Luck of the Draw album. The song is ranked #339 on the Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The pensive ballad depicts a now one-sided romantic relationship about to end. It has some brutally honest lyrics that I could relate to at that time:

Turn down the lights, turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head

Lay down with me, tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don’t patronize… don’t patronize me

‘Cause I can’t make you love me if you don’t
You can’t make your heart feel something it won’t.

Here are three versions of the songs: Adele, George Michael and Miss Raitt herself:

One Remark

  1. One of my all time favorite songs, which always chokes me up. I always loved Bonnie Raitt’s version, but after hearing George Michael’s cover, I totally lost it. He sings it with such emotion, that you can actually feel the pain he is going through. Adele is amazing, but she doesn’t come close to George’s version in conveying the heartbrake.
